The film For Greater Glory (2012) portrays the Cristero War (1926-1929) in which the Mexican government suppressed the Catholic Church through a series of anti-Catholic and anti-clerical policies.
This option event supports the study of the novel, The Power and the Glory, by Graham Greene, which is set in the context of the Cristero War and follows the fictional story of a priest who attempts to minister to Catholics in Tabasco during the violent persecution of Catholics. This story explores the experience of the Mexican people during this period of oppression and introduces students to the effects of an extreme, authoritarian government influenced by socialist policies and its effect on freedom, religion, and personal faith.
Because For Greater Glory is rated “R”, students must sign a permission form to attend the event.
