A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.  I love the exploration of self-sacrifice and self-worth in the book, and the story is compelling.

What is your favorite book and why?

Other than the Bible, my favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is the only book that I have read more than once and it reminds me of the tragedy in the pursuit of worldly things.

What is your favorite part of the school day or school year?

Every morning I stand at the front entrance and welcome students into the building. I get to see the smiles, the struggles, make jokes, and have conversations before I go back to work. These relationships are what I will always cherish and remind me why I come to work every day.

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. There are so many reasons to love Don Quixote but my absolute favorite thing about the novel is that, despite all its silliness, the core of the story is a man striving for virtue.

What is your favorite part of the school day or school year?

I love October. Students are comfortable with each other, teachers have developed strong relationships with students, there’s excitement surrounding Homecoming, and it feels like our community is super strong.

Hatchet – It was one of the first novels I remember reading. My father introduced me to backpacking deep in the wilderness as an 8 year old boy and it was those experiences that helped put me in the shoes of the main character.

What’s something awesome about school life that you feel is unique to Machebeuf?

Showing up to intramural Volleyball at lunchtime to see Sister Mary Gemma providing a perfect set to a teammate, or catching one of the brothers pushing himself to get an extra set of leg squats in right after school.

One of my favorite celebrations of the school year is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Families come to make conchas, tamales, and more while we listen to live mariachis at lunch. We have even had a traveling image of the tilma visit our school!

What is your favorite book and why?

The Cypresses Believe in God by Jose Maria Gironella; Gironella manages to demonstrate in microcosm the complicated politics that brought Spain to the brink of its civil war in the 19030s. While the book is so Catholic, the author manages to be as objective as possible, while also showing the heroism of the protagonists. This is a long book, but it’s one that, when I finished it, brought me sadness because I felt as if I were losing friends. The relationships are real in this book, as are the ideologies. It is both a brilliant work of fiction and of history.

What’s something awesome about school life that you feel is unique to Machebeuf?

The love of Catholicism that all the teachers bring to the school.

What is your favorite book and why?

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien – Tolkien beautifully and necessarily reminds and encourages me to live life beyond the Shire.

What is something awesome about school life that you feel is unique to Machebeuf?

The Integrated Humanities curriculum is ultimately what initially piqued my interest in Machebeuf. I love that it exists and is offered to our students with the purpose of providing them with a uniquely beautiful educational experience, leading them to truth and helping them live the fullness of life, rooted in Christ and community, which they are made for. On top of that, what a blessing it is to be part of a community of faculty and staff that lives and implements this way of life.

What is your favorite book and why?

Laurus by Eugene Vodolazkin. It’s a quirky Russian novel about a man’s search for redemption. It’s set in medieval Russia and takes you on a journey that reminds you that oftentimes saint and fool are synonymous.

What is your favorite part of the school day or school year?

My favorite part of the school year is March. Not only is Spring creeping in outside, but inside the school students are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. They start making plans for the next year and are looking forward with hopeful expectation.

What is your favorite book and why?

Anna Karenina. Its beautiful prose creates a dynamic plot of interweaving storylines. Its critique of society’s valuation of emotion over morality is masterful, questioning the often-assumed definition of love and underscoring the importance of virtue.

What is something awesome about school life that you feel is unique to Machebeuf?

Students choose to spend time together at lunch rather than stare at their phones. They play soccer or frisbee outside, read in the sun, or chat with each other and their teachers.

What is your favorite book and why?

“The Day the Crayons Quit”… because it is a narrative of what happens when my students do not care for their materials. As far as novels… I’ve enjoyed Fydor Dostoevsky’s The Brother’s Karamazov. I love how Dostoevsky’s imagery resonates with me.

What is something awesome about school life that you feel is unique to Machebeuf?

The community and faith life! We also have a rich cultural diversity that the students are proud to share with each other. I think this is representative of the many parts of Christ and the body of His church!
